Youth Baseball Tips: Making Fielding Practice Fun For Kids

 Print this page

Author: Robert Bulka

Most young kids just want to bat and easily get bored and distracted with the routine infield practice drill.  Here is a great fielding drill that will add an exciting twist and keep the kids focused. Enjoy this great drill to teach kids baseball skills.

What you'll need
2 baseballs
1 baseball glove

Preparation
Start by going to the outfield or an area that is smooth.  Avoid areas that are rocky and/or lumpy to prevent injuries.
Have the kids form a semi-circle 20' to 25' away from you and 10 feet between each player.
The number of participants can vary between 5 and 10.  Solicit help from assistant coaches and/or parents to create additional semi-circles, I recommend starting with 4 to 6 players.
These are only guidelines so feel free to change the parameters as you see fit.

The Drill
Start by rolling the first ball randomly to someone in the semi-circle.
While the ball is being thrown back roll the second ball again randomly.  It's that simple!
Keep it lively!

The kids really enjoy the surprise when the ball comes to them. In fact, if you run the drill without the random order, the kids lose interest quickly.
Keep the kids off guard using simple misdirection (look at one player while throwing to another) and rolling it numerous times to the same player.
Continue this until the kids are warmed up.

The Hook
After the kids are warmed up declare a competition.
The rules are simple:
When a ground ball is missed or the return throw isn't accurate - you're out!!
Have the player sit down until the round is over.
Last one standing is the winner.
Repeat the drill as desired.

The Benefits
Sharpening their fielding skills
Enhancing their throwing skills
Practice throwing after catching a ground ball (throwing to the first baseman after a catch)
It's competitive
It's great fun!!?  The kids love it! You'll be hooked too!  It's a nice change from the same infield practice routine!!!
