Mini Marshmellows, Frozen Peas and Baseball Hitting

How do mini marshmellows and frozen peas have anything to do with baseball?

Really nothing, until you think outside the box. Both of these items can be used effectively to increase the batter's hand-to-eye coordination and develop the feeling for the sweet spot on the bat.

Have you heard of the soft toss? This is a hitting technique when a coach or teammate throws a ball underhand from a position adjacent to the hitter. The "tosser" lobs the ball at the hitter, who hits the ball into a net, fence or into the field.

The soft toss can significantly increase the hitting mechanics and build up the hand-to-eye coordination needed to be an effective hitter. Just thing what happens if you use a mini marshmellow or frozen pea instead of a baseball?

The benefit of soft tossing smaller items are obvious. The smaller the object is to hit, the more concentration and eye contact is needed to hit it. It takes significant focus and hand-to-eye coordination to succeed. In addition, it helps the batter gain more confidence. But even more important, It helps to increase more effective hitting on the "sweet spot" of the bat.

One thing to note about using frozen vegetables - refrain from using this technique on the youth baseball players who have problems making contact with the ball. The last thing you want to do to discourage in their efforts to hit a baseball.

I highly recommend the mini marshmellows over the frozen peas - for safety sake.
